Brigit’s Garden event: Nature Mindfulness

University of Galway

The Galway team led an in-person workshop for older adults and people with dementia and their supporters and family members. The report was submitted to the Age-Friendly Ireland newsletter.

The day brought together people living with dementia and their supporters for a relaxed and reflective day centred on wellbeing, connection, and conversation. Surrounded by peaceful gardens, participants were invited to slow down and enjoy the sights, sounds, and textures of the natural environment. The session encouraged participants to notice sounds, textures, colours, and movement, creating space for calm, enjoyment, and shared presence. Tea and informal conversation followed.

Researchers shared insights from their work and listened to the experiences and perspectives of those attending. These conversations highlighted the value of learning from one another and keeping people at the heart of research. The day demonstrated the importance of bringing research into the community in meaningful and accessible ways.

Forest bathing is increasingly recognised as beneficial for older adults and people living with dementia. Research suggests that guided activities in nature can support relaxation, mood, attention, and social connection, while helping to reduce stress and low mood. Simple activities such as slow walking, breathing exercises, and sensory engagement may support cognitive health and emotional wellbeing (Yi J et al., Int J Environ Res Public Health, 2021).

We would like to thank everyone who took part, Brigit’s Garden for hosting the session, and the University of Galway for their support.
